What even is the point of cities in a world without work?

sex.

On that point, am I the only one that finds just the concept of AI sex avatars as viscerally revolting?

AI is just the sum of its training data. (most) humans' preference for privacy in sexual matters means the flywheel will never get up to speed for this particular application. Plus humans are just more fun. I've yet to see a machine that gets vulnerability.

I don't know that it's got a great deal to do with privacy, for me anyway.

With porn you can at least entertain the idea of emotional and genetic aspects of sex as being in the background.

AI avatar porn seems like getting randy for a erotically shaped joystick. It's just desperately sad.
