The 6809 was by far the better CPU, but it was more pricey and the 6502 had some absolutely amazing software written for it (Notably: BBC Basic, Elite).

Definitely the better CPU. You could write position independent code on it for a start.

That, the MUL instruction, hardware support for multi-tasking. Atomics.
